A heavy rainstorm struck Mirfield tonight causing flash flooding.

The main A644 Huddersfield Road was worst affected as drains overflowed under the pressure of the sudden downpour.

The area outside Mirfield Showground, just outside the town centre, was underwater and a red VW car parked on the roadside appeared to be marooned.

Half the road was flooded as drains failed to cope.

Ironically, the Showground has recently undergone extensive land drain works to prevent the annual

Mirfield Show in August from turning into a mud bath.

Show volunteer Richard Hartley, a former town councillor, went to check out the Showground - and got drenched by passing traffic.

Also hit was Huddersfield Road near to Halfpenny Bridge at Battyeford - close to the Pear Tree pub - and also Dunbottle Lane.

There were also floods around Clarkson Street at Ravensthorpe.

There were reports on social media that the main Co-op in Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, had to close early due to water damage inside the store.

It appeared the Co-op car park was also closed.
