Several main roads have been closed after a tanker carrying potentially hazardous chemicals spilled some of its load.
Fire crews were called to Cooper Bridge Road, Cooper Bridge, at about 7.30pm to reports that a chemical had leaked onto the road from a tanker.
Police shut the road between the Cooper Bridge roundabout and Cooper Bridge Road towards Bradley.
Wakefield Road, at Clifton, was also closed while fire crews liaised with technical services to remove the toxic chemical - thought to be an oil-based solvent - from the road.
It is not thought the substance entered the drains or water course.
A fire service spokesman said it was believed the potentially hazardous substance had leaked from tanks which were not properly secured.
A firefighter at the scene added the spillage had caused a couple of vehicles to skid out of control at the Cooper Bridge roundabout.
