A young man died in the early hours of this morning after he hit a stone wall while driving along Penistone Road, New Mill, Holmfirth.

The collision occurred at the junction of Church Street, at 12.30am.

The black Suzuki Grand Vitara was travelling in the New Mill direction when it left the road and hit a dry stone wall.

The 20-year-old driver, a local man, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Huddersfield Infirmary but died shortly afterwards.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw the vehicle shortly beforehand.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.

The tragedy comes just weeks after another young New Mill man, Jordan Gartery, 21, lost his life after stepping into the road outside his home and being hit by a car.

The accident took place on Holmfirth Road, between the junctions of The Crescent and Greenhill Bank Road, New Mill, on Thursday, September 26, at 8.17pm.
