A cyclist in his 50s has suffered serious head injuries following a crash with a lorry on Wakefield Road this afternoon.

The collision happened at 3.22pm when the male pedal cyclist was involved in a collision with a lorry.

Police and ambulance were called to the A644 which is now closed in both directions.

Numerous motorists witnessed the collision near the Premier Inn on the key stretch between Cooper Bridge and the M62.

Yorkshire Ambulance sent a rapid response vehicle and a land ambulance to the scene.

The service confirmed a man in his 50s taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with serious head injuries.

The lorry driver is not believed to have been injured.

Traffic is queueing between M62 J25 (Brighouse) and A62 Cooper Bridge Road.

The area is severely congested and delays are expected.
