It was a huge blaze that drew hundreds of onlookers to the scene and took more than 50 firefighters to put out.

Last August a huge fire ripped through Colne Mills, the site of the new Aldi supermarket in Slaithwaite, last August.

The blaze began at around 8.30pm on August 1 and smoke soon spread across the whole village.

No one was injured.

Mark Schofield, who had been drinking in the nearby wine bar, told the Examiner: "The fire had been burning for about 20 minutes before the fire brigade got here.

"We just stood there and watched it get bigger and bigger."

At the time, the mill off was earmarked for a new Aldi food store - and the German retailer was  planning to demolish the buildings to make way for a 16,000 sq ft supermarket.

The supermarket is currently being built and is due to open in November.

Slaithwaite village centre will become a 20mph zone ahead of the supermarket opening.

Councillors approved works to Slaithwaite roads, required before Aldi open their store in early November, in July.
