Birkby make-up artist Melanie Lenihan to oversee Olympic ceremonies

SHE has done the make-up for film and TV stars around the country.

But now Melanie Lenihan is to take on her biggest challenge yet.

The mum-of-two will be one of three head make-up artists for London 2012.

And she will oversee the look of 7,800 performers involved in the July 27 opening ceremony and 5,000 in the closing ceremony along with both Paralympic ceremonies.

She will be working with ceremony organiser Danny Boyle, the director behind the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.

The Birkby woman said: “I am starting to feel a little daunted but it is just such an honour to be involved.

“I have had live drama experience with the BBC and I think it is through that connection that I was selected.

“I can’t give away any of Danny’s secrets for the ceremony, but it is very conceptual.

“He has said right from the beginning that they will not be able to compete with Beijing’s millions, so it is going to be something quite different.

“I will be one of three head make-up artists who will oversee four key make-up artists, who in turn then look after 14 assistant supervisors and they will look after all the make-up volunteers.

“We are in the process of looking through and pulling out volunteers with experience in make-up.
