The Barking Spider

The Barking Spider

NOW open in Albion Street is The Barking Spider, Huddersfield’s brand new bar, dining venue and exciting night spot.

Opened by Mark Robertson, The Barking Spider occupies premises which many Huddersfield people will formerly remember as The West Riding pub. Following a complete refurbishment of the former empty premises, the bar is now open for business.

With new contemporary decor, the building is unrecognisable from how it was years ago and brings a brand new venue to Huddersfield.

Mark is keen to promote The Barking Spider as a venue which offers something for all ages and lifestyles, starting at 9am with breakfast sandwiches and coffee etc following by a full food menu from 12noon to 6pm.

The Barking Spider

All food on the menu is freshly made to order and includes a wide range of sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, salads, larger plates etc.

Choices include old favourites such as roast beef and dripping sandwiches, pork and stuffing butties which sit alongside contemporary tastes including chicken and chorizo risotto, flatbreads with king prawn, lamb kofta kebab and goats cheese, along with a range of burgers and pizzas There will also be regular promotions on a range of food and drink so watch this space! Once evening arrives, The Barking Spider takes on a new feel with regular live bands and DJs booked to appear on Fridays and Saturdays.

One of the first live events will be on Thursday (July 8) when Nu Popes will perform a mix of jazz, funk and soul - so get your dancing shoes on! Sure to be popular is DJ Ice (Nigel Reid) who will be appearing regularly.

With tables outside for fine weather, big screen TVs ideal for watching sport, a state-of-the-art music and video system as well as a great choice of beers, spirits and wines by the glass, The Barking Spider has it all.

Mark says: “Everyone is asking about the name of the bar. We took the name from a bar which started life in downtown New York in the early 1930s or 40s. When music became the rage, bars stayed open longer and longer and `Old Joe’s’’ was the first early fresh food and coffee venue with late music and drinking.

“People complained about loud music saying it was driving them mad and even the spiders were going nuts. Because of the situation, Joe changed the name to The Barking Spider.

“We loved the name and decided to bring The Barking Spider to Huddersfield.

“Why not call in for lunch or see the bar come alive in the evening with live music? There’s loads planned for the summer months so come and join in the fun at The Barking Spider.’’
