This takeaway didn’t really take wing . . .

I’VE had quite a few Chinese takeaways in the past, but getting one on a weekday night was something of a novelty for me.

I wasn’t surprised to find Wings in Brighouse empty early on a sunny Wednesday evening. I hoped it wasn’t an indication of the standard.

The menu was so long it took me a while to find the vegetarian options then decide what to go for. And I wasn’t entirely comfortable with the owner standing over me while I decided.

I went for the vegetable chow mein, but decided against adding a set of spring rolls, knowing I struggle to finish most takeaways.

My order was shouted through to a cook in the back while I took a seat on one of the benches and waited.

My wait wasn’t the most pleasant, no thanks to a screaming child I could hear in the back.

My vegetable chow mein was packed neatly in a takeaway box and placed in a bag before I could see it, but it certainly smelled good.

I was relieved that I had opted against the spring rolls as the noodles filled a large plate, piled high.

But I found my chow mein to be too greasy and bland in taste.

There was a lack of vegetables, too, with only two small pieces of broccoli in a large portion.

It was an average Chinese meal, but at least it saved on the washing-up for the night.
