Chitra himself spent 15 years serving with The Gurkhas but has now turned his attention to serving top quality food to the people of Huddersfield.

Opened last year in the autumn, Gurkha Thali has quickly established itself as a favourite with local diners and particularly at weekends, it is essential to book a table.

The restaurant, in the Cherry Tree Centre, Half Moon Street, is open seven days a week.

The main menu includes a great choice of authentic dishes including generous starters, main dishes, seafood and vegetarian options.

At the heart of any Nepalese meal is Dal Bhat (lentils and rice) and Achar (chutney). Unique to Nepalese cooking is the use of fresh herbs and spices prepared in a Khal, a stone mortar.

Nepal which is the land of Gurkha soldiers, the birthplace of Lord Buddhan, the land of Himalayas and Mount Everest, offers food with a unique taste from the various regions.

At Gurkha Thali, the most popular dish is Mo:Mo, a starter dish of lamb dumplings with a Nepalese chutney and Thali set meals which are available in both vegetarian and meat dishes.

To accompany the meal is a wide range of rice, breads and side dishes.

Ever helpful to diners, the restaurant menu offers a guide to whether dishes are hot and spicy or milder, whether they contain nuts and whether they are suitable for vegetarians.

A takeaway service is available with a 10% discount on collected orders over £10 and a free delivery service is offered on orders over £12 and within a three-mile radius.
