Classical concert date

THERE’S a musical treat in store at Oakes Baptist Church next month courtesy of Paddock Orchestra.

The musicians will play at the church on March 8 conducted by Tom Newall, a young musician who is currently completing his music studies in Durham.

The concert programme will include the Overture Hansel and Gretel by the German composer Humperdinck, Dvorak’s 8th Symphony and Saint Saens’ Cello concerto.

It is a demanding programme for the orchestra and one that will feature a young cellist, Charlotte Smetz who is also studying at Durham.

Tom, who is from Leeds, travels from the north-east for regular rehearsals with the orchestra. He is a bass-baritone and is studying for a music degree at Durham University. His passion is for conducting though and he has been working with the orchestra since he was a first year student at Durham.

Tickets for the concert at Oakes are £6 (£3 concessions) from Jean Gooden on 01484 661196.
