Learn sacred harp singing

KEEN singers can exercise their vocal chords at a musical event with a difference.

Sacred harp singing has its roots in America, encouraging participation and the sheer joy of making music.

A chance to learn how to do it is being given in a workshop at Choppards Mission in Holmfirth on Saturday, March 27.

Singers sit facing inward in a square and the singing is unaccompanied, despite the name. Included in the repertoire are psalm tunes, odes and anthems by early American composers, along with settings of folk songs and revival hymns.

Newcomers will get a chance to get acquainted with the style first.

The fun will start at 10.30am and finish around 4.00pm with a break for lunch. Drinks will be provided and a collection will be taken.
