WHEN budding journalist Vijay is nearly killed in Bombay riots he is sent to a tea estate near a spectacular Christian shrine that is the object of religious wranglings.
Vijay soon learns there is more to the shrine than expected when he meets the enigmatic figure of Noah, the local rebel.
Surprisingly, in a small backwater obsessed by prize fuchsias, the age-old problem of class distinctions and gossip, our hero finds his most fundamental beliefs shaken to their foundation.
Beautifully told, this story engages with the realities of Indian life with a charm and humour in the best tradition of Narayan and Naipaul.
