World of words

DEEP in the heart of a dusty Kenyan desert a train of heavily-laden camels winds its way slowly through the bush. Panniers are stuffed to bursting, not with grain or medical supplies, but with books of every variety.

This unexpected wealth of literature - from cookbrooks to Tom Sawyer - takes the tiny nomadic settlement of Mididima by storm. All titles are eagerly devoured under the blazing African sun. However, volunteer Fi Sweeney soon discovers that although this project brings hope and offers a link to a different world beyond, it also represents the inevitable destruction of a fragile way of life.

This beautifully told tale was inspired by the real Kenyan Camel Mobile Library, set up by the government to improve literacy in poverty-stricken areas.
