Whistle stop for two brass bands at Bradford

SOME of Yorkshire’s best musical talents will be on show at a concert at Bradford University later this month.

Huddersfield-based YBS brass band, the former Yorkshire Building Society band, will play at the university’s great hall on January 31, starting 7.30pm.

The band, which has roots going back 150 years to when it was founded as one of the amenities for the people of Saltaire, has, over the past decade, been one of the region’s most successful competing bands.

The concert will also feature David Morris, the World’s Top Whistler, as well as the Hebden Bridge Junior Band.

David, who lives in Saddleworth, will feel very much at home in front of a band. He started playing the cornet when he was 13, played principal cornet and was musical director with many northern bands and has taught people to play brass instruments.

These days, he dedicates his musical life to the arts of whistling and brass. He appears as a soloist with orchestra, concert and brass band and has won the title of World Whistling Champion at the global event in the USA.

The Hebden Bridge Junior Band offers opportunities for young aspiring brass players and has appeared on radio and TV.

Tickets are £5 for students and £7 for non-students, on 01274 233137.
