Fashion and beauty: Helping an older bride to get ready for her big day

Her first piece of advice was that brides should not choose make-up that is dramatically different from their everyday look. Soft, natural-looking make-up enhances rather than covers up.

Eryl has lightly tanned skin and rarely wears foundation so Sue used a tinted moisturiser, applying it with a brush to get an even coverage.

“White or ivory dresses tend to radiate light up to the face so it’s always best to go a shade lighter on the face. The tinted moisturiser gives a sheer glow,” she explained.

“Brides should stay away from pink or purple/plum eyeshadows because these can make the eyes look sore,” said Sue, who used a luminous pearl with green on Eryl.

“And you should always apply lots of eyeshadow and then blend it away with a soft clean brush. If you don’t start off with a lot you will end up with nothing. Blending is the key.”

For weddings Sue also recommends the use of water resistant mascara. “Ours is long-lasting aswell. Bridal make-up has to stay put all day. But you should also use a primer on the lashes to get really good coverage,” she said.

Last, but certainly not least, Sue applied blusher then a dusting of translucent powder to ‘fix’ the make-up. “Give everything a once-over to blend the blusher in,” added Sue.

Her make-up completed, a delighted Eryl agreed to try on a bridal gown as a rehearsal for her big day.

At Pronuptia we found a stylish, tiered gown in ivory chiffon. The only bling was provided by a Swarovski crystal tiara.

“I’ve already got my dress but I’m really tempted to have this,” she said, “because it looks so great.”

Eryl, who met her bridegroom seven years ago after a colleague set her up on a ‘blind date’, may not have been married before, but she did have a

long-term relationship and has an 18-year-old son, Stephen Firth, who will be a witness at tomorrow’s ceremony. The couple’s other witness will be Clive’s 20-year-old son Joel Nelson.

For their honeymoon the couple will be heading for a short break in a romantic cottage in Norfolk – with their Cavalier King Charles spaniel Tessa keeping them company.

“It’s going to be wonderful,” said Eryl.
