WHEN brow bars started springing up a few years ago many customers were wary of what they offered.
“It was a fear of the unknown,” says Debbie Monk, UK operations manager for Biju, which has brow bars in seven northern department stores.
Biju opened in Huddersfield’s House of Fraser exactly two years ago and has seen its turnover more than treble in that time.
Debbie says that initially customers had to be persuaded to try the ‘threading’ technique practiced by Biju beauty therapists.
But today customers are prepared to queue for their services.
Eyebrows have become big fashion news with celebrity endorsements of what is known as the ‘high definition brow’.
Debbie says the Huddersfield brow bar attracts customers of all ages – even men.
“People are not tentative any more,” she said. “Beauty magazines are devoting whole pages to brows.
“The fact is that your brows shape your face and frame your eyes. It’s the only facelift in the business that doesn’t need a needle.”
Threading is an ancient technique, performed with nothing more than a length of cotton thread and a practised eye.
As the thread is rolled across the skin, it picks up small hairs. Threading, while not painless, is quick and can be used to remove any type of facial hair.
Many brow bar customers also opt for tinting as eyebrows commonly fade as part of the ageing process.
Biju was founded by Debbie’s sister, Gina Davis, and her business partner Myra Nelson and is Manchester-based.
They saw a niche in the market for dedicated brow treatments.
In Huddersfield the company has refurbished a beauty room in the House of Fraser store in Kingsgate and is offering a whole raft of other beauty treatments from leg waxing to manicures and eyelash extensions.
To celebrate the opening of the room we’re offering a £300 prize package – in time for the school prom season – to three friends.
The package includes eyebrow threading, manicure and pedicure with polish, eyelash extensions and make-up for all three.
If you’d like to enter, write and tell us about yourselves, your school prom and what your friends mean to you.
All entries must be received by one week today.
