Comfort food is round the corner

THIS family-run fish and chip shop used to be on one of the main streets in Brighouse town centre, facing Thornton Square.

These days it has retreated round the corner to a narrow side road leading to the market and canal, leaving the original premises to be converted to a coffee house.

But that hasn’t diminished the chippy’s popularity. Go there almost any time and there will be at least a few people in front of you.

And you can see why. It’s a sign of confidence in the grub they serve up there.

With experienced and pleasant staff it was quickly our turn.

The fish was a good large piece, white and fresh and with a general tastiness. The batter was golden, crisp and light, without the sogginess you might get elsewhere.

Chips were chunky, light and fluffy inside and not all greasy.

You can’t ask for more than that. It all tasted lovely.

On the whole, it was an excellent experience.

It was a simply cooked meal for a reasonable price.

Our national dish is alive and well here. We English can still do something well.

Very tasty and worth a bite if you’re passing – especially on a cold winter’s night.

Pure comfort food.
