HUDDERSFIELD’S love affair with the curry continues – despite the fact that many diners over a certain age have never even tried one.
At a time when many eateries are struggling, another restaurant featuring food from the Indian sub continent has just opened.
Following on the heels of Pink Elephant and Balooshai in Honley and Desi Buffet in Birkby, the latest addition to Huddersfield’s ever-expanding stable is Street, The Curry Bistro in Lindley.
Street began life on June 12 in the Acre Street premises previously occupied by Thai Chilli.
With so much competition, restaurants have to find a position in the market and owner chef Shehzad Hussain has placed his new bistro firmly at the upmarket end of the spectrum.
He describes his new venture as Pakistani cuisine and Street as his latest creative vision. Alongside traditional fare with a new twist are more unusual dishes such as hara (green) stir fry, murgh potlis (chicken breast parcels stuffed with coriander), nach gana (sweet hot plum puree with chilli) and braised spiced lamb.
In opening in Acre Street, the former Lindley Infant and Junior pupil has returned to his roots. In the intervening years he has built up a name for himself.
Shehzad’s parents opened Memsahib, opposite the university, in 1990 and he went on to open his first restaurant, Balooshai in Honley, followed by the restaurant of the same name under the arches in Huddersfield town centre.
In 2004 he sold these and four years later opened The Street which has developed a reputation for its buffet which has good fresh food at reasonable prices – £11.50 during the week and £12.95 at weekends.
When we visited Street (without a The) last Sunday evening, the restaurant was about half full. The interior decor is rich and Eastern, walls have been painted in block colours of terracotta, lime green and ochre offset by a purple ceiling. Some of the chairs were left over from the Thai era and added to the Oriental feel.
The description may sound odd, but everything pulled together to create a deep, rich ambiance. The sort of place that would work either for a romantic meal for two or a meal out with friends or business partners.
