Restaurant review: The Ford Inn, Greenfield Road, Holmfirth

A HEARTY comforting meal in a cosy country pub was just what we needed on a cold winter’s evening in early February.

Only a couple of hours earlier, a vicious icy hail storm had been rattling against my front window but being intrepid souls we wrapped up well with boots and extra woollies in the car and set off for that well-known local landmark The Ford Inn at the top of the hill between Meltham and Holmfirth.

As always the place was busy. Despite only being early evening on a cold wintry Tuesday there were plenty of cars already in the car park and people enjoying a meal out.

With its roaring fires and traditional feel, The Ford Inn continues to be a popular venue year after year with locals who are looking for quality food.

Today food at The Ford Inn is serious stuff, all served in a contemporary style with quality the key word.

Looking at the menu, my friend and I took a while to ponder and make our choice. Mind you, we did have a nice glass of Chardonnay to keep us quiet while we studied the options.

A choice of six starters had us thinking but eventually we opted for the pan fried button and field mushrooms served on sweet brioche with a white wine and garlic sauce along with the chef’s homemade parfait with aramelised red onion chutney and toasted brioche.

Both arrived swiftly, looking stylish and extremely appetising.

My mushroom starter was about as far removed from a conventional mushroom starter as it could be and looked like a work of art on a plate. It tasted good as well.

My friend’s pâté was equally stylish and delicious, coming complete with a scrummy red onion chutney and lovely tasty bread.
