Graham Porter’s Gardening: Delphiniums

1 Non-invasive perennials – the search continues.

D – Delphiniums of all types, tall, medium and short will work well in sunny positions. Deschampsia (Hair Grass) is a native of our area and some of the modern hybrids are worthy of a garden position. Dicentra species will perform well in partial shade but do not care for acid soils. Perennial digitalis species such as grandiflora and x mertonensis will do will unless you have very wet soils. Doronicums, the leopard’s banes, are a perfect example of a well behaved perennial and will give a good show in spring in a sunny position. Don’t forget to use the RHS Plant Finder at www.rhs.org.uk to help you source these plants.
