Gardening: Mowing season approaches

ROUGH up your lawn – now that the next mowing season is about to get underway, you might consider giving your lawn a good scarification with springbok rake or a mechanical scarifier.

 Our lawns have been frozen and covered in snow for long periods over the last two months and the process of scarification will help to freshen the lawn up and get air circulating again amongst the grass roots to aid the new grass growth when it gets going. If you have lots of moss in the lawn consider giving it a treatment of Sulphate of Iron in March – this burns the moss, turning it black and it also helps to green up the grass again.
