1Vegetables – side shoot vine tomatoes regularly to keep the main stem growing upwards.Do not do this on bush tomatoes such as Tumbler. Keep a close eye on courgettes and cucumbers for male flowers and remove as you see them. Thin out carrots and parsnips but keep the rows covered with fleece to prevent carrot root fly from entering. Sow extra rows of peas and dwarf French beans as well as catch crops of salad leaves such as spinach, rocket, corn salad, land cress and lettuce.

2Fruit – use pheromone traps in apple trees to trap codling moths. Tie in new canes of raspberries, tayberries, loganberries and blackberries. Erect fruit cages over bush and cane fruits to stop birds from stripping the ripening fruit. Remove runners from strawberries to push all the plant’s energy into the ripening of the fruit.
