Gardening: Graham Porter’s weekly diary

THE wonderful Meltham Gardeners’ Society 70th annual show runs today at the Church Hall, Greensend Road, Meltham.

It is sure to be a bumper event, with nearly 90 classes, including lots of children’s classes, from plates of beautiful potatoes and extravagant vases of dahlias to scrumptious jars of chutney. The show opens to the public at 4pm and I will be officially opening it at 5pm. Admission 50p.

` If you haven’t got your tickets yet for Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, you have until September 6 to buy them on-line.

Visit www.flowershow.org.uk for more details of the show which runs from September 16 to 18 at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

This year’s autumn show includes some of the old favourites such as the Giant Onion Competition, the National Vegetable Championships, the Floral Art competitions, the photographic competition, the various plants society shows (Dahlias, Gladioli, Fuchsia, Chrysanthemums) and the wonderful displays by nurserymen from all over Britain (their theme is ‘A Famous Garden’). New to this show is a Giant Vegetable Competition, the Garden Border Competition and the Fruit Show.

I will be manning the Garden Advisory Bureau once again so bring along your gardening problems and have a chat. Call the show office on 01423 546158 for tickets sales if you do not have an internet connection.
