Our house: Drinking in that cottage charm

The couple’s cottage is still full of features connected to its past.

These include some fantastic beams running through the spotlight-peppered ceiling of the lounge and dining space and the old vaulted cellar.

Says Kieron: “You can tell where the cottage has been converted, there’s some unevenness and different steps up.

“It’s definitely quirky with all the doors being different sizes.

“The floors slope and when we moved in we had to put wooden blocks on the furniture. But this all just adds to its charm!”

The couple have gone for a fairly contemporary furnishings throughout, which they feel sit really well with the more traditional features of the cottage.

Says Kieron: “The lounge is a fantastic room. It has a lovely cosy feel, yet is a great space for entertaining because it’s also got the dining area.”

Another feature of the couple’s unique home that they really love is the sun terrace, which has great views over the surrounding countryside.

Kieron says: “The roof terrace is great, it’s a real sun trap and we’ve had some superb barbecues up there.

“The views are really lovely, looking out over fields towards Emley Moor mast.

“The location of the house is great. It’s just a few miles from town yet you feel like you’re right out in the countryside.”

Since they first moved in the couple’s family has expanded and they are looking for a new place to call home with their children, Niamh, two, and seven-month-old Ollie.

But the family hope to remain in the Fenay Bridge area, which is close to all their friends and family.

Says Kieron: “The house is unique and we will definitely miss the quirkiness of it.

“It’s not for everyone and it’s not all perfect – but that’s what we’ve loved about it.”
