Fresh: Music reviews

KID A: WasnotwasSomething of a cymbal-bashing teen soul drone that’s stripped right down to basics and has the annoyingly repetitive line “your lips are like they’re on fire.’’

JUST JACK: Doctor Doctor.Insanely catchy with Jack turning out a buoyant funky track with his trademark meaningful musings - this time about when obsession turns from unrequited love to dark resentment. Still, he sounds jolly enough about it.

DAVID SAW: Buy My Record.Soft and fluffy soul rockabilly from a songsmith much admired in songwriting circles but virtually unknown out of them. Brought up in Aylesbury, yet a chance meeting with Carly Simon’s son led him to moving to America and living with them.

KILLA KELA: Built Like An Amplifier. The Beat Box guru has applied his talents to ‘singing’ with a frazzled beaten-up synth backdrop. It’s not pleasant, but then again it’s not meant to be. Edgy to the point of weirdness with its mashed-up freakiness.

SILVERSUN PICKUPS: Panic Switch.Nothing to worry about, never mind panic with this tormented bittersweet guitars swirling rough and tumble and a voice rising above it with a bizarre kind of innocent ring to it.
