Although I like Cyclamen as houseplants, they can be difficult to manage in our modern centrally heated houses. It is because of this factor that I have always preferred the hardy Cyclamen that do so well in dappled shade in Britain.

Cyclamen coum, originating from the Eastern Mediterranean, produces its variable shades of white, mauve and red flowers in early to mid spring with a delicate surround of typical Cyclamen leaves, some varieties of which can be beautifully marked - and they never get any taller than 100 mm (4”) high. Its species name reflects the island of Kos in the Aegean Sea where you may still be able to see it growing wild amongst the trees and scrub higher in the hills....

YES, I’ll agree that only a few teenagers cause trouble. But there are a few in every village, every suburb, every town centre, every bus station and quite a few in every school....

1 Strawberries and cream – plant new strawberry plants now at 450 mm centres in well-prepared and manured soil. To get the best out of the plants in the longer term, do not crop them in the first year and remove any runners as they form to put energy into the formation of good strong crowns for next year. Keep the plants well watered in dry spells and feed with a balanced general fertiliser before planting. Look forward to strawberries and cream in time for the Wimbledon 2009.

2 Reverted shoots – as the years have gone past, we have been presented with more and more variegated shrubs to enhance the colour and interest in our gardens. Shrubs such as Eleagnus, Euonymus, Ceanothus, Ligustrum and Pyracantha all have variegated types for us to choose from. The problem comes when, a few year down the line, your shrub has produced some green shoots and the variegated part is a small, insignificant little piece buried beneath vigorous, dark green foliage. This is called reversion and the variegated plants almost always send up these green shoots that have REVERTED to the original species. These green shoots need to be found and removed whilst they are only small shoots so that they do not take over and now is the best time to do it before the growing season begins....
