IT is estimated Britons consume eight billion plastic bags a year, the equivalent of 133 per person per year.

Many retailers – M&S being the latest – have been doing their best to steer their customers away from disposable plastic bags. With a little more thought, we should be able to make the concept work.

In the interests of saving our scarce natural resources it seems like a small sacrifice.
