When I retired I invested some savings in a tax-free offshore bank account. Now I have received a letter from the taxman that suggests he knows all about this and wants some tax. Firstly, since bank accounts are confidential, how could he know about it? And secondly, as my money is in a tax-free offshore account, what business is it of his as the interest is not taxable? Sorry, but if you live in the United Kingdom on a permanent basis, you have to pay British tax on offshore income. That’s why the taxman is making your account his business! If the account was advertised as tax-free my guess is that this meant that no tax was deducted in the country where the bank is located. No offshore bank could promise that interest it paid would somehow be exempt from British income tax. How did the taxman find your account? Well, about three years ago the European Union ordered banks in all member countries to disclose savings account details to the tax authorities. And ever since tax inspectors have been comparing those details with information shown on people’s tax returns. It looks as though you are facing a tax bill, plus interest and penalties. Hand over all the details now and you can at least keep the penalties to a minimum. Read
