Green fuel convert, for now
Jun 16 2008 by Our Correspondent, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
MANY drivers are apparently paying £2,000 a time to convert their petrol-guzzling cars to run on cheaper LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).
This is a greener fuel that costs just 49p a litre, compared with petrol at 114.9p per litre or diesel at much more. In 1998, there were 3,500 LPG drivers. This year, that total has risen to 150,000. A conversion involves installing an extra tank, fuel lines and injectors.
This could be the answer for those who do a lot of miles and are spending a fortune on petrol. It could also boost the resale value of their vehicle when second hand car prices are taking a tumble.
Until, that is, too many people go for the conversion.
Then Gordon Brown will be sure to slap another tax on it.
