I shall be 65 next December. After reading something you wrote recently about the extra tax allowance for people over 65 I phoned the tax office, but was told to call again after my birthday. Will the extra allowance be backdated, or does it only count from the day I actually turn 65? My income for the year will be about £17,000. A.W.

The tax office has given you bad advice. You are fully entitled to the extra allowance from the start of the financial year on April 6. You do not have to wait until your actual birthday to claim. And yes, if you claim now, it will be backdated. Read
