HANDS on heart, there can be few of us who did not have a view on the speculation that Madeleine McCann’s parents were somehow involved in her disappearance.
Rumour was rife and everyone seemed to think the whole business was decidedly fishy.
But, it really is most unlikely that the McCanns would have gone quite so public with their world-wide campaign were they guilty of murdering their own child.
The original tragedy begat a second - the naming of Gerry and Kate McCann as official suspects, or arguidos.
So, for the past year, the two doctors have not only had to handle the grief of losing their daughter, but also the knowledge that there were many who felt no sympathy, only ill will, towards them.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to yearn for a child who has been lost in such circumstances.
They may have been guilty of neglect - and I certainly wouldn’t have left my children alone in a holiday apartment at that age - but that doesn’t make them murderers.
Further revelations are planned by the former head of the investigation in Portugal but I, for one, am now tired of the slurs and innuendo and will not be buying the book written by Goncalo Amaral, who is simply capitalising on the case.
