That’s the way to put on a festival

THERE will be the chance to watch full-blooded violence and cruelty to crocodiles on Huddersfield Piazza at the weekend.
Yes, the town’s seventh annual Punch and Judy Festival takes place on Saturday from 11am to 4pm.
The tradition originated in 16th century Italy, came to England in the 17th century and has been popular ever since, surviving its decline as a traditional seaside show and the efforts of the politically correct to have it banned.
It is violent, but, say it’s supporters, so is Tom and Jerry and children view the grotesque wooden puppets with the same detachment as they do cartoons. They know it’s not real.
Saturday’s extravaganza is organised by Professor Les Clarke (all Punch and Judy exponents are known as The Professor) and also features Professors Ian Gyde and Tony Clarke. Uncle Vic will be adding to the entertainment.
The free event, presented by Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership Ltd, has this year moved to the main grassy area of the Piazza.
Les says, “The audiences are so enthusiastic and we see some of the same faces back every year.
“With the move to the main Piazza area, we hope many more fans of all ages will join us at this very special event.”
