Forum: Drivers in firing line
Dec 2 2008 by Andrew Jackson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
THE Examiner’s story about drink-drive checks on Monday morning got some people hot under the collar.
Police were pulling over motorists near to Syngenta on Leeds Road as part of the kick-off to the Christmas campaign to stop people getting behind the wheel.
Hgl didn’t think such a big operation was necessary, adding: “With the news that the police had a purge on drink drivers who are still over the limit the morning after, they caught one driver out of over two hundred who were stopped.
“Well there’s always one isn’t there? So do we need all those bobbies tied up with this? No wonder they don’t respond to three nines calls; just motorist bashing again.”
1Gemini added: “When I go walk from Marsh down Westbourne Road at night I never see a police car hiding away on this stretch of road.
“The number of drivers speeding along one of the main roads in Huddersfield at night just beggars belief.
“When I’m going to the clubs in town I see eight policemen all together opposite Kingsgate while there is no other policemen anywhere else (take this Saturday for example) and the funny thing is the anti-social behaviour happens not in the view of these eight police officers.
“If you tested how many cars on a Saturday at 1am-4am around town had drivers that were drunk I think you would get more than 1 in 200.”
Emperorj is sick of what he sees as the taxing of car drivers: “Same old story, if you can afford petrol, you can pay a fine.
“They see the driver, pull him over and speak to him. If he smells of diesel/petrol, they let him go, as it’s obvious, he had to syphon the fuel. No money, can’t pay fine, not worth the time in court.”
Unclegrumpy has had enough as well: “Oh dear, how depressing. The only time I see the coppers out in force in on match day. For the Tuesday night match against Leyton Orient they were doing their best to look busy but had nobody fooled.”
