Webforum: Knock down the Town Hall as well!

WE used to make dens when I was little.

A few sticks and some branches and maybe a spare blanket and that would soon become a brilliant hideaway for me and my mates.

Until some bigger boys chased us from said des res or it got kicked in during the night.

Anyway, it seems we now need to build places for kids to hang about so they don’t monopolise bus shelters and town centre benches.

Anyway, Otis wrote: “Should Kirklees Council demolish the Cliff Road shelter used for antisocial behaviour?

“This was the question posed by the Examiner poll for readers to vote on as reported on the letters page Monday, July 7.

“The rest of the paper was reporting schools and kids’ clubs being shut down by the council.

“The condition of the roads. The state of St George’s Square.

“The deterioration of the town centre and effects of building three new supermarkets on the ring road.

“It’s not that long ago that the council itself was accused of vandalism as it went around knocking down head stones in the graveyards.

“Can’t be too long before we are having a vote on whether we should demolish Huddersfield Town Hall.”

Mowdiwarp obviously has a different agenda to the fearless leaders in the town hall: “Maybe a vote regards demolishing the Market Hall (the architectural ‘gem’) would attract more interest?”

Despondent has hit upon a second use for the market hall – one to help get the youngsters fit being as they don’t build dens anymore: “I’ll second that. Demolish the eyesore. If they flip the roof over they have the start of a skateboard park.”

Spare a thought for poor old poster Leadboiler. Who knows whether he or she perished but a Leadboiler2 has appeared like a phoenix from the flames!

Anyway, the new Leadboiler, or maybe the old Leadboiler, wrote: “The saddest part of all is ‘they’ demolished the old Market Hall which had so much more character – a bit like getting rid of the Monday Market.’’

So, planners, if you’re listening knock down the Town Hall, flip over the roof on the market and hurry up and finish St George’s Square!
