Web Forum: Castle Hill hopes

CASTLE Hill was once a name synonymous with Huddersfield and pride in the area. Now sadly, whenever the subject is brought up it seems to be surrounded by controversy and ill-feeling in some form or another.

Maybe the good days will return with the announcement of the latest proposals...

despondent set the tone: “Seconds out, round how many? Here we go again with yet another proposal for the pub, why can’t the council just insist on ‘like for like’ on the outcome and insist it is the only option open for consideration.”

phil3 wondered: “The Kirklees website link you posted despondent must have had something revealing, because they have removed the page.

“So much for freedom of information.”

despondent explained: “Basically it revealed that a study, undertaken by a professional body, concluded that any venture on the hill was not a viable financial proposition, the suggestion of a ‘off hill’ car parking area would, naturally, be frowned upon by anyone seeking to stay in the hotel when their vehicle would not be readily accessible to them. The proposal of a shuttle service from the car park to the hotel was a poor idea.

“Bad access would not attract customers away from already established hotels already having repeat bookings for the service they offer.

“Also mentioned was the absolute limit of the original hotel’s footprint and a total bar from encroaching the surrounding Green Belt.

“So, unless the Thandis can come up with a Tardis they look as if they have backed a loser with their plan.”

Albert reminisced: “Years ago on high days and holidays you could buy a cup of tea and a bun inside Victoria Tower. I wish the council would stop wasting money on the Thandis. Leave the site alone as a green lung for kite flyers and the like.”

Dismayed_of_Dalton was dismayed, again: “Kirklees won’t be having any kite flying at Castle Hill Albert, if they have their way all forms of family fun will be banned at Castle Hill due to health and safety or some other half-baked reason.”

despondent cheekily added: “Well, almost all, still one activity going on up there.”
