Web Forum: Spell Check
Nov 11 2009 by Andrew Jackson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
THE letter Gordon Brown sent to Jacqui Janes, whose son Jamie was killed in Afghanistan, has split the opinions on our forum.
DiRTYToRque raged: “For God’s sake get the name right if nothing else.”
markmyword49 had some sympathy: “Damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
If he’d sent a typed letter of condolence with a mimeographed signature there would still be a furore.
“I notice that the paper involved taped the telephone conversation between Brown and Janes.
“Perhaps they’d tell us if they also wrote out the questions for her and schooled her in the correct response to what Brown said.
“I’m sorry to say that it’s yet more of the media acting like a pack of hyenas when they scent blood.
“As a poster on another board asked, ‘What would her son really think of what she is doing?’
“He was happy to join the armed forces (maybe she was not?). He was not conscripted.
“When he joined we were already in both Iraq and Afghanistan so he knew that he would see ‘action’.”
Mowdiwarp had suspicions: “Very convenient to have a recording device there and for the lady concerned to have the presence of mind to switch it on.
“If the papers are not employing people to ‘bug’ mobile phones they are now resorting to these tactics.
“And would they not be the first to scream about infringement of civil liberties if this was employed against them?”
Otis: stood up for our PM: “I cannot understand the fuss over a simple spelling mistake.
“Could I just say that I think Jordon is doing a great job of leading our country. “You’re all very ungrateful. You should remember that last year this person personally reduced inflation.
“When compared to earlier inflation it made a difference which was noticed and reported all over the world.”
