Web Forum: Snow joke
Dec 22 2009 by Andrew Jackson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
THE heavy snowfall on Sunday caused havoc on the roads around Huddersfield and the Council’s efforts to clear them were on the agenda for our Forum users.
Ghengis bemoaned: “It took me over three hours to get home today, a journey that normally takes 10 minutes. Manchester Road was an ice rink. There is no way they can say it had been gritted. The snowfall wasn’t severe. I can’t believe we pay so much road tax and council tax for such a level of service.
despondent reminisced: “Oh the joy of being retired. After 25 years of being the first needing to dig a path off the garage site to the main road I can now watch from my window while some other person does it.
“I once, a long time ago, purchased a product marketed by General Motors that was basically a can of spray glue that was applied to the tread of tyres. The grip on ice was terrific, didn’t last long but it got you moving.
“Another was to tie short lengths of rope, in the style of snow chains, through the wheel and round the tyre, lasted a couple of miles but increased grip on deeper snow. Where there’s a will there’s a way.”
StephB Welcome to the slightly crazy world of Examinerblogs Genghis! You don’t have to be daft, but it helps you to understand it all!
Markmyword49 wasn’t happy either: “Not much of an improvement over what happened earlier in the year.
“Heavy snow was forecast from early afternoon yesterday but no effort appears to have been made to grit the problem routes.
“Brother-in-law saw gritter/plough at just after 6am when he was digging his car out. He says that once you got past Colne Valley High School going down Cowlersley it improved (don’t tell me the management of the gritting teams still thought CVHS was open this week?)
Causeway Side was almost impassable according to an aunt so it’s probably a good thing CVHS is on holiday already.
“The much vaunted improved system of gritting/ploughing has once again failed at the first snowflake.”
