WHAT with the recent icy temperatures and deluge of the lovely, fluffy white stuff, the topic of global warming and climate change once again reared its head on the Examiner’s forum.

Dave50 was hot under the collar: “No wonder Gordon Brown was bending over backwards trying to get a deal. He must have been rubbing his hands thinking of all the ways he could use climate change as a way of screwing even more taxes out of us.

“He’s already promised billions, money we can’t afford.

“The carbon trading thing is just a complete money making scam. I am sick of having the whole subject of climate change shoved down my throat, I am not interested and whenever they tell me to drive five miles less, I will drive five miles more.

“In fact if I see someone stuck in the snow as I am driving passed in my 4X4 & they are in one of those hybrid cars then I won’t be rescuing them on principle, serve them right for being so self-righteous.”

markmyword49 added a bit of balance to the debate: “Good for the current generation in the developed world.

“We can go on using up scarce non renewable resources and generally polluting the planet out of all proportion to our population.

“Not so good for the developing world who will continue to use “old” technologies in their dash for growth in response to their population’s desire for the same living standards as the developed world.

“A catastrophe for the poorest states who will bear the brunt of any climate changes whilst being “ripped off” by the developed and developing states. Agribusiness with their mono-culture systems and the exploiters of non renewable resources underpaying for the damage they do to the environment of the states.

“The climate talks failed because the politicians were more frightened for their personal immediate fate than that of the long term future of the planet. We obviously get the politicians we deserve.”

despondent gave us all a real optimistic boost for the New Year: “Some looney hacker will again thwart the USA defence computer system and this time release the waiting missiles, global warming will then be the least of our problems.”
