Web Forum: Gritting Pt II

The gritting debate rages on....

despondent said: “Just in time deliveries may work for supermarkets but trying the same technique where winter weather is involved is doomed to failure. The North has been badly hit and were first in the pecking order for replenishment. It’s a shame we no longer have the stockpiles of the past to rely on, at least we had enough to keep the majority of roads ice free the entire winter season.”

phil3 gave a scientific slant on things: “Unfortunately, when decision time came earlier this year, the council took the wrong one regarding the stockpile of grit for the coming winter. They simply hoped it would be a fairly mild one and have kept their fingers crossed ever since. They have now been bitten by that decision and the rest of us who rely on the roads being clear for our living, are having to suffer the consequences. If you subscribe to the global warming theory, it will get colder for us in the UK, as the melting ice flows will cool the oceans, which is where, according to physicists, 90% of the heat for the earth’s climate system comes from.

I think too little grit will be the least of our problems should that come to a natural conclusion.”

markmyword had seen the council men in action: “I don’t know about not gritting but they are certainly ploughing round Blackmoorfoot on a regular basis (looks to be hourly). However, the snow is still falling (so much for the weather forecast! How many centimetres did they say?)”

despondentwas baffled: “Hang about there, not too long ago they were telling us Britain would end up with the climate of Spain, who’s kidding who here?”

bernie had some advice: “There are those of us who have never subscribed to the man made global warming scam. The global temperatures have actually started to fall in recent times. Those long in the tooth like me might remember the scare we were given 30-40 years ago that we were heading to a new ice age.

My tip for the future, invest in snow chains for your car.”

despondent recalled: “I used to have a pair of wheels rigged up with Town andCountry tyres ready for the winter, as soon as we got the first snow fall they were put on the car, the deep tread kept me moving fine. Do they still make them?”
