Web Forum: Worrying state

THE current state of the nation and the direction in which it is heading has certainly got the tongues wagging and fingers tapping the keyboards.

markmyword49 enlightened us: “A hung parliament will lead to a further election within a year.

“The majority party in any coalition will do what is necessary to appease voters and increase their own popularity. They will then engineer a confidence vote in the Commons which they know their junior partner will not back. They will lose the vote and go to the country for a fresh mandate.

“It’s happened before and it will happen again.

The real winners will be the ‘casino’ bankers making their ill-gotten gains by betting on the rise or fall of sterling.”

bernie added: “Forgive me if I am wrong but have we not had 13 years of a Labour Government selling its soul to the financial establishment? Was it not the Labour Party who loosened Bank of England control of the banking world, hedge funds and other spivs? As a small shareholder in Lloyds I feel sold down the river by the Government fixing up a merger with HBOS. I feel that Labour has lost all credibility and that they were never really comfortable trying to out-Tory the Tories. Now the public must make them pay with a spanking defeat.”

markmyword49 had strong views on the subject: “I had some funds in Northern Rock (nowhere near the limit for compensation) but I was still all in favour of letting it ‘go to the wall’ along with HBOS and all the other financial institutions which got themselves into trouble. I did not, and still do not understand why we should bail out ‘casino’ bankers.

Normal retail banking should be ‘ring fenced’ or stand alone businesses subject to extremely tight rules and regulations. If financial institutions want to gamble with new financial instruments that the directors and shareholders do not understand it should be through companies that will be allowed to fail.”

despondent reminisced: “An MP’s role was once regarded as an honour to be representing your constituents. Now it’s another avenue to lie and cheat and get away with it. ‘Hung Parliament’ has been quoted earlier. I would love to see it done.”
