Family History: Graham Denby weathers a storm in Portugal

I mean, what’s the problem with out-running a tree? Back at Colne Valley High School I had no enthusiasm for the cross country runs we had to endlessly endure in double games, because the footy pitches resembled the Okeefinokee swamp (yes, I had to look up the spelling) at high tide, while the games teachers took an extended fag break.

But I do reckon I could have sauntered in well ahead of a tree! Besides, the tree could never have hopped over a wall to take a short cut could it?

Just now the weather has dropped quite a bit colder and we’ve had a bit of frost in the mornings, but the rain and damp has gone ... hooray.

The wind remains however, but this does help dry out the countryside. The horses are well rugged up, in case you’re wondering. The Portuguese find this an amusing sight – who but us would put coats on hairy horses?

I did find out that the name of the horrible hurricane (political correctness now giving male and female names equal standing) was in fact Hurricane Gordon. This got me to thinking, what an apt name!

Who comes to mind if you say that a Gordon could be an irritating, unpopular, destructive blowhard?? Answers on a postcard please to No 10 Downing Street!
