Web Forum: Bin snowing
Jan 21 2010 by Andrew Jackson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
SNOW, black ice, grit, rubbish, councils and wildlife – the Examiner forum has it all!
JohnMooney4 was up in arms: “It has been nearly five weeks since bins were emptied in some parts of Marsh. We have a rodents’ paradise with bin bags all over the place.
“Kirklees’ bin collection policy is a farce. There is no slack in the system for anything out of the ordinary. If we had weekly black bin collections – as promised by Labour if they gained control of the council – then the problem might not be as bad.
“The system needs spare capacity for times like this. I tried to argue this point a while ago with the people responsible but was met with total stonewalling – they are not interested in what is best for us, only in meeting Government targets. This stinks – literally.’’
Palerider2 had some sympathy: “Situation the same here but to be fair there was so much snow and ice on the service road where the bins are that I wouldn’t have tackled it either! Just keep securely bagging it up and let’s hope that they can get to it ASAP.’’
aliban in true Bill Oddie Winter Watch style said: “I saw a couple of rats on Westbourne Road on Sunday.’’
despondent had some praise too: “Apart from the expected disruption caused by snow the guys have done well in the Newsome area.”
Unclegrumpy blamed us, the public: “Now the snow has gone (although the A640 Buckstones Road is still shut) there’s loads of rubbish everywhere. It just highlights what a rubbish-creating society we live in.
“I took my black bin bags from pre-Christmas down to Vine Street yesterday. We were queuing round the block.
“On a footnote, the slopes of Longley golf course became a handy sledging venue for the duration of the cold weather but the retreating snow has left the area strewn with a depressing amount of litter left by the sort of people who I would prefer not to share the planet with.’’
Tigger saw lessons to be learned: “Perhaps this experience calls for Britain to fall in line with many countries in Europe who arrange for communities to have a central place to deposit waste.
“That way, it would be cheaper to collect, and the rubbish would all be stored in one place away from people’s homes.
“Although my waste was collected only yesterday and meantime we took a trip down to the tip, it was a small inconvenience and I preferred the bin wagons be off the roads in these dangerous icy conditions.’’
