This Life: Musician Ruby Wood

LIVES: Birkby.

OCCUPATION: I work part-time at Café Ollo in The Media Centre. I also help run an event at the Media Centre called Acoustic Revolutionaries, which provides a showcase for local musical talent, ages 16-25. When not working at the café I am pretty much a full time singer/musician. I am in many different musical outfits including Huddersfield hip-hop super group Extra Curricular.

What was the last movie you watched at the cinema? Quentin Tarentino's Inglorious Bastards.

Which TV programme is your all-time favourite? Hmmm... got to say Eastenders, its the best most depressing soap around, he he!

What makes you laugh? Lots of things really, I’m a fan of comedy.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Cuba is on my hit list, the music, the culture, I just feel drawn to that place.

On a personal note, what is your best quality? My voice.

..and sorry, we have to ask, what is your worst fault or bad habit? Not being able to wake up in the morning, therefore I’m often late for things.

What is your favourite local shop? I love Huddersfield market on a Saturday.

Name your ideal way to spend an evening out. Going to watch a good band perform, in a nice venue with my friends.

How do you normally spend Christmas and New Year? The usual, at home with my family.

What is the last book you read? I think it was a Louis Theroux book?

What is the last luxury item you bought for yourself? A snazzy microphone.

Looking back in history, who is the man or woman you most admire? Jazz saxophonist John Coltrane.

Name a favourite piece of music. Hmm, that’s hard, I love lots of music, but anything by Jill Scott especially.

What is the most important thing in your life today? Music, writing new music, working with lots of different people and my lovely boyfriend.

Have you ever had a pet and if so, what did you name it and why? Jefro the cat, I let my boyfriend choose the name in the hope that he’d let me have a cat, although I’d prefer to name my cat after jazz musicians. ie Mingus, Thelonius, Coltrane... I named my rabbit Badu, after Erykah Badu lol.

If you could go and watch any sports team, who would it be? Ermmm, basketball maybe, dunno I’m not a sports fan really.

What concerns you most about modern life and today’s society? How can young people get on the property ladder?

Who would you like to be stuck in a traffic jam with? Stevie Wonder and a harmonica, ooohhh yeaa!
