DavidH:Bulls Head pub's waitresses too young to wash up by council: “These teenagers appear to be working with the consent of their parents and pub landlord David Dobson does not appear to be exploiting them, so what’s the problem? I assume his premises comply with all the necessary regulations concerning health and safety so its does appear petty, but perhaps if there was an accident he could have problems with his Employers and Public Liability Insurance so maybe Kirklees is protecting him as well as the teenagers. Kirklees is only following the law which appears to prevent teenagers who are still technically children (the two 15-year-olds) from working in a potentially harmful environment. Maybe it’s the law that needs changing, but then would we have kids exploited working all hours in the kitchens of all our family-run takeaways ? Sometimes rules that appear petty are there to protect vulnerable people from been taken advantage of by unscrupulous parents who happen to run a business and feel they are above the law in child labour and employment issues.
“On a positive note it’s good to see teenagers who are prepared to work and I am sorry they are been penalised for being good role models, but then life’s not fair and this demonstrates how we appear to be going backwards as a society.”
idlejohn:Cyclist Paul Brierley tells of pothole misery on journey to work
“The winter has not helped, but is not the main cause of road surface failure. Years of road neglect, poor restitution work by utilities and governments using our road tax for anything but the roads, have led to a terminal decline in road surface quality.
“When central government and the local authorities wake up to the fact that the road infrastructure is important to a country’s efficient running and wealth then things may improve, but I will not hold my breath.”
dave62 agreed: “Where are these 10 pothole crews we keep hearing about?
“Due to the state of the roads, perhaps it is a good idea of Kirklees to cause utter gridlock on them. The way traffic lights are timed certainly makes Kirklees one of the biggest car parks. Ah well, no doubt the green brigade will wake up one day and realise who it is causing this needless pollution.”
