Webforum: Have you bin good?

COUNCILS are rejecting Government calls to bring back weekly rubbish collections. Local authorities, including Kirklees Council, have warned that attempts to change back from fortnightly to weekly waste collections would dramatically increase costs – and would reverse efforts to increase recycling rates.

Markmyword49: “Why go to the added expense of returning to an old system in order to pander to a minority of a minority who would carp at any decision made by Kirklees regardless of merit? “We’ve all got used to the newish fortnightly collection. We only have three different receptacles to sort into. It hardly takes a rocket scientist or huge amounts of time to sort the contents.”

SteveB: “The only issue I have with the fortnightly collections is the bright spark who decided that having missed a collection at Christmas (grey bin) to continue on the normal pattern, so it went grey, green, (skip a week), green, grey. This meant it was four weeks between the grey bin being emptied at a period when most households create more waste than usual anyway.”

Intsticks: “I think the current system works very well. I have a family of four. My green bin is usually just about full by collection day, my grey bin is often only half full. My glass box is full.

“Yet I see people on my street with overflowing grey bins who never put their green bins out – they never use them. No doubt these people moan about bins being too full.”
