HIGHWAYS chiefs have announced the timetable for congestion-busting M62 improvement work. The ‘Managed Motorway’ scheme is set to tackle the notorious stretch of motorway from Brighouse to Leeds by opening up the hard shoulder to traffic between J25 and J30. Work will begin between October and December 2011.
Magdale: “If fuel prices continue to soar, then folks will be going by public transport as they won’t be able to afford to drive to work!”
Grumpyguts: “And when public transport has reduced competition from the private car just watch bus and train fares soar faster than ever.”
Village_idiot: “So what happens when a car has a blowout or catches fire and needs the hard shoulder and what happens when a driver is pulled between the junctions? A dangerous option in my opinion!”
Cynicalagedone: “This will just mean four lanes of standing vehicles in each direction when there is an accident instead of three. If the hard shoulder is blocked, how will emergency vehicles get to the scene of incidents?”
NorwegianBlue: “In the event of an accident it’s likely that traffic will be stationary. This being the case how will traffic move off the hard shoulder to allow the emergency services through? The government tell us that trials of this system have been successful, but how many major accidents occurred during the trials?”
