Web forum: What’s the greenbelt for?

A LANDOWNER wants to build hundreds of homes in the greenbelt.

Thornhill Estates has proposed a huge commercial and residential development at Ainley Top. Kirklees Council wants to allow 200 new homes in the area as part of its controversial Local Development Framework (LDF). But Thornhill has suggest quadrupling this to 800 houses. The exact location is not known. The landowner also wants to develop a five-hectare site at Ainley Top which it says would create 750 jobs and attract £180m of investment.

tickytyke wasn’t in favour: “As we know they apply for 800 knowing full well they’ll accept something much lower just to make it look good for opposing views.

“Are they going to sell the lovely M62 road noise? I doubt it!

“Do they realise how congested it is already around there?

“What we need right now is WORK! “There’s an awful lot of empty new homes already in and around Huddersfield/Halifax.”

Within the full article it explained how the developers had plans for hotel and leisure, health and fitness and small-scale retail amongst others.

Rutland had one thing on his mind: “A simple question: Why and who needs these ‘facilities’ never mind the housing?

It was black and white for Robinhood: “Simple answer: The landowner should be allowed to do what he wants with his land.”

There were technical reasons for BillIngham: “We know from what was said at Lindley Moor planning meeting that air pollution at Ainley Top exceeds European standards. Kirklees’ own Air Quality Plans show that Birchencliffe together with other areas cause concern when it comes to dangerous levels of traffic fumes. Come on Kirklees, make a stand and stop these developments in their tracks.”

But humpsdaughter saw it in human terms: “We all want our sons and daughters to be able to live near to us. If there are no homes then they can’t.

“We need more houses and they have to be built somewhere so why not where they are needed?

The opposite view from marshman: “What is the point of green belt if it is not free from development?

“It is time the planners considered the wishes and quality of life of the existing residents.”
