Web forum: M62 works

WORK will start later this month on a scheme to ease traffic jams on the M62. But it will mean many months of roadworks for thousands of drivers using the stretch from Brighouse to Rothwell.

Engineers hope the end result of bringing in hard-shoulder running will be to ease many of the traffic jams that bring cars and lorries to a halt.

The actual construction work will start in October and is due to be completed by early 2014.

But wait a minute, Huddersfax_resident wanted to know: “With the country in economic crisis wouldn’t it be better just to wait a few more years and use the money to bolster council funds and prop up support for the volunteer/charity groups instead?

“Or is this just to keep the major Conservative-sponsoring contractor companies busy?

“Can anyone else give a reason why these motorway works are so urgent after years of suffering the jams?”

Markmyword49 had a reason: “An attempt to make it look like the ConDems are interested in constituencies outside the South East?

“By the way, it’s not only the donors to the party from the construction sector that want infrastructure improvements.

“Sponsors in other sectors want to close local operations and centralise them regionally but want to keep wages down by employing people from further afield.

“Therefore they need an efficient transport infrastructure for these employees to commute to and from ‘dormitory’ towns and villages like those around Huddersfield and Halifax.”

SteveB: “So they’re not doing anything at Junction 27 (Ikea), the biggest bottleneck by far in the evening peak?”

grumpygutswanted more: “They will need to stretch the extra lane to J24 and beyond when the madness at Ainley Top begins.

“Much of the congestion comes from traffic using the only northern motorway going east-west.

“We need a second motorway either north of south of the M62 to provide the extra capacity and, while we are at it, a Flockton by-pass.

“This cart track of a road is the only route cutting out the long detour to Lofthouse for traffic heading west from the M1.”
