Web Forum: Bikers M62 protest

BIKERS ‘go slow’ in M62 protest against new EU motorbike regulations.

bobby_hudds: “It’s not the normal every day road user ‘singling out’ motorcyclists so why should they go out and cause unnecessary congestion on already busy and over congested stretches of highway, causing untold grief and annoyance for the ordinary motorist?

“I have a real dislike for any group or organisation that goes out of its way to inconvenience normal folk just because they have a grievance about something. This is not the way to deal with it.”

Intsticks: “The moment a group does this it loses the sympathy of all but hardcore supporters, be it firemen, farmers, truckers or bikers. That support goes as soon as they inconvenience normal people who have no power to change things.

“Having said that, they do seem like stupid rules.”

HuddersFax_resident: “So it’s now wrong to show your opinion or support? Bikers have been penalised more than any other ‘driver’ of a vehicle for many years not just about the bike itself but the very obtaining of a licence is harder for a biker.

“Personally I’d like to see it compulsory for all car licence holders to have to pass the same CBT as a biker before they are allowed on the road – that alone would save thousands of lives.

“Also remember it’s the cars that cause the congestion you speak of, not bikes, so you can’t complain about bikers holding up motorist congestion, can you?”

Markgsx: “The demonstration was chosen to for a Sunday to minimise disruption. The outside lane left open for vehicles to pass. It was for 20 minutes, not a great deal of time. It was more to show the Government we hope they will defend our rights as UK citizens from the faceless unelected bureaucrats in Europe rather than gain support – which if it does, is a bonus. Some of the rules even affect small cars.”

Ross_F: “MAG does not just rely on the people power of demos like this, but is also a respected organisation that the Government consults with when it comes to motorcycling issues and MAG members actively engage with MPs and politicians at all levels.

“The protest was against EU proposals, and our own Government is also not convinced that the proposals stack up and create a benefit for anyone in the UK. If bikes are the target now, how long until all personal transport is being heavily restricted with unnecessary and costly legislation?”
