MIXED reception for third Holmfirth Tesco store plan:

Westmaster: “Morrisons on Penistone Road over the years has had a massive effect on the traffic on this road. Although bigger than the proposed Tesco, don’t underestimate what it will do to traffic over the coming years.”

Weezey: “I live in the valley and I am all for it – I was a little disappointed to see there was no petrol station proposed. I am looking forward to being able to afford and do a weekly shop in my home town. It will also give me more time to be able to go to the market and visit the shops in Holmfirth.

“Whilst I can see the concerns about the impact of traffic it will be lovely to see the eyesore that the site is now developed. Tesco can only be a good thing.”

Tradders: “Geoff Fursse (Examiner, September 24) states that the proposed building would be an eyesore from New Mill Road, but if my understanding is correct it is now a single storey construction which will be down where the old Midlothian workshops used to be, therefore I think it will be barely visible from the road. However, I haven’t seen the detailed plans yet so I could be wrong.”

Weezey: “I took the time to go and see the plans for Tesco and you are correct – the plans for the site are a single story building set back from the road and below road level, accessed via a slip road that wraps round the site. Apart for some obvious signage the only part of the building that will be visible from New Mill Road will an access stairwell with lift for pedestrians to gain easy access to the store.

“I fail to see how that can be any more of an eyesore than broken concrete, weeds and the general air of neglect that is there now.”

Mamacass: “I am in favour of having a Tesco and it would mean that I would stay in the valley rather than using the Huddersfield supermarkets as much.

“I am curious as to why there are no plans for a petrol station – can anyone shed any light on this? Surely there can’t be any vested interests blocking this, as the nearest filling stations currently are Brockholes or Honley.”

interested: “Why are we trying to protect ‘local trade’? Holmfirth has a real lack of diversity in terms of shops – a Tesco will break the stronghold of the over-priced, under-stocked Co-op and bring new retail interest and choice to the town, which will need to find new way of attracting people now that the Last of The Summer Wine has finished. I think it’s a great plan.”

Angry_From_Meltham: “Holmfirth twinned with Royston Vasey! Tesco is not local.”
